Hello from RH

I'm writing from my momma's house today, as my apartment is unbearably cold. I'm sure I've mentioned that I have single-pane windows in my apartment, which means that it's as cold inside as it is outside, which means last night I slept in a hoodie, sweatpants, and socks (yes. socks.), under the covers. Brrrrrrrr.

Dog Walks

My brothers (Evan and Jordan) came by my place before we "broke the fast" for Yom Kippur (even though we never fast). We got coffee at The Fyxx and took Boris out for a quick walk before heading over to our great-aunt's place for dinner. Evan took this pic of Boris and I walking through a random alleyways that connects Arthur and Albert.

Albert St.

I was walking home from school last week, and came across a smell so awful I didn't know what to do but take a picture of this piece of sidewalk on Albert Street. This is somewhere between The Fyxx and Mondragon (a popular hangout for the local homeless people). I can't even begin to describe the smell... It was just bad.

(a walk to remember)

Practical Jokes

My brother Evan left this out on the counter for me today when I came home to my momma's house for the evening. Momma said he had this whole plan to leave this out on the counter and hide the dog as a joke. Unfortunately, he got bored of waiting for me to come home, and aborted his plan. I give him an A+ for the effort.

Earls

(hahaha this was my favourite work day of all time)

Hi Momma.

Hi Momma,
Just wanted to let you know that it's 3:30 am, and I'm finally home from a very long day 14 hour day at work. I was at home for a bit today, between doing cash and serving. I took a nap in your bed and it saved my life.
Send my love to Boris; I miss having him around my apartment, and I can't want to bring him back to his little Exchange apartment tomorrow afternoon.
xoxo Lauren

Whiskey Dix

Whiskey Dix is off the hizzle right now (for some University of Manitoba social - or so I've been told). Unfortunately, I doubt the hot dog stand is out there tonight.

I've been having mini-dance parties during my study breaks, so life isn't all that bad. I dont know why people always ask me if the noise gets to me. If they're playing loud music, then I'm going to dance, dance, dance. What else is there to do?

Yawn, Bon Soir.

Ps. Shots (LMFAO) is currently being mixed with Hit Me With Your Best Shot. Barf.

This is why I love the Exchange.

(please ring bell for free gift of coffee (via tube from the 4th floor))
Little things like this make me so so so happy that I live downtown.

BFFs

(Slow Boris Loves Getting Cuddled)

I took these pics of Boris today. He's my ittle bittle baby boy, and the best companion I could ever ask for.

Garbage Day at The Bate.

Wednesdays are my favourite day of the week for only one very good reason: Garbage Day. It's the day when I can rid my apartment of a weeks worth of garbage, and leave it where it belongs - on the sidewalk near a parking meter on Albert.

FACT: Glad ForceFlex bags are full of lies and empty promises. They neither protect your floor from old oysters nor do they hide the smell.

Clothes Clothes Clothes Clothes Clothes Clothes

Sooo I got home from school late last night, and stumbled across this interesting sight:

The mannequins from the long-time abandonned Commonwealth Blend are long gone, and the windows are all papered up. I asked Mike (who owns Unfold Apparel and Connect Four) and he said something about a new Canadian designer (?) is moving in there. Clothes!!!

(Boris is lookin' good as usual, and out to impress the ladies)

Appliance Alleyway.

To make a long story short, the one outlet I have in my "kitchen" constantly breaks, and I hate having to reset it.
The next available outlet is on the floor next to my bathroom, which is now my cooking space. Yesssssssssssss.

(if this doesn't impress the boys... I dont know what will)

edit: I microwaved myself some delicious frozen macaroni last night.

Comeback Kid.

Super-secret show was tonight at Venue 13 aka The Spot Above Ragpickers. I ran into a few friends outside the show who filled me, and unfortunately I couldn't make it down, as I needed to eat my Pita Pit and take a serious nap for a couple hours.

I could hear the entire show from my apartment, and while I'm not into hardcore punk at all, I can respect these guys because they have such a dedicated following. It was really cool to see people out in the Exchange for once, so good for them for picking an excellent venue.

PS. Thanks to all the hotties who were milling around outside my apartment - you were excellent eye candy.

Concerned Children's Advertisers

I've always had an obsession with the Concerned Children's Advertisers (CCA). It hasn't been with the organization themselves, but with their television ads. They're absolutely brilliant. At lunch today, Cindy (my cousin) and I were talking about how everytime we hear the song He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother by The Hollies, that CCA PSA comes to mind.

I was looking through the CCA's website this evening, and found all the PSAs that they've put out. To my surprise, the CCA doesn't do their own commercials, they've used various Canadian advertising agencies such as Cossette Communication, Leo Burnett Company Ltd., Round Table Advertising, and Publicis.

Either way, they're great. I never realized how much of an impact these PSAs had on me until now. As I watched each one, it brought me back to when I was a kid, sitting a foot away from the television watching Sesame Street. I'm still fascinated by every new PSA that is on television, and I'm secretly hoping that one day I can be on the creative team that creates a new PSA for Concerned Children's Advertisers.

Here's the address to the rest of the PSAs: http://www.cca-kids.ca/psas/index.html

Family Lunches.

Her: What are you planning on doing after you graduate? Television?
Susan: Are you going to be a TV reporter, like on Global?
Me: No. I hate being in front of the camera. I get awkward and feel uncomfortable.
Susan: You'd be great on camera. Why don't you want to be on camera?
Me: I just don't like it. We had to do a couple Journalism bits infront of the camera last year, and I couldn't remember what I was supposed to say.
Her: Well I can tell you'd be a great reporter. You're a good talker, and you've got the look. I used to be in Journalism. You could do it easily, there's way more money in it too. And you'd be able to travel all over the world.
Cindy: Yeah you should do it. You'd be good on camera.
Me: I like writing advertisements.

Her: So what are you going to do in advertising then?
Me: I want to do copywriting for radio, or work at an advertising agency.
Her: What's your plan b?
Me: Um... I'm just planning on putting in my time and moving up the ranks.
Her: Well I wouldn't count on it. By the time you're 30, they'll eat you up and spit you out and find someone better to replace you. Trust me, I know. I used to work at an advertising agency in Edmonton. The only people who stay on past 30 are all alcoholics or druggies.
Me: Oh.
Her: Trust me. You don't want to end up like that. You're not going to go anywhere unless you do something with Journalism. Have you considered web reporting? I really think you should be on TV.

This is the conversation I had with my cousin Cindy's aunt Susan's cousin (whose name I do not know).
She: a) only uses her phone for talking b)only uses her mac for emailing c)only checks her email once a week d)referred to Twitter as "a useless waste of bandwidth."

Rosh Hashanah lunch was a lovely one. Tonight I'm going to party like it's 5669.

Wireless, or lack of.

My internet really sucks. I've been using someone else's connection (I'm not saying who for fear of it becoming security-enabled), however it's been kind of sucky all night and I think I'm losing my patience. I can't upload photos onto my blog right now, which makes me sad sad sad.

If you know the passwords to these connections, help a sister out:
  • usp
  • OLDMARKETAUTONOMOUSZONE1
  • OLDMARKETAUTONOMOUSZONE2
  • impactvisitor
  • enigma
  • impact
  • Unnamed Network
  • TERNEN
  • wskydix
  • CWB

Ho-hum, I can't wait until the day that I will able to get cable/tv/my own wireless connection for my apartment. Until then...

Winnipeg Harvest

So, I'm quite pleased to say that my IPP has pretty much started today! I posted my first two posts on the new Winnipeg Harvest Blog.

Winnipeg Harvest was my charity of choice for a number of reasons, aside from being a charity I strongly believe in, I have been volunteering there on and off for my whole life. My synagogue would organize volunteer nights there, and my parents and I would go along with 20 or so people to help sort food, during high school I volunteered there for extra-credit, and when I was 16, I won the Winnipeg Harvest “Kids Who Care” Award, which honours Winnipeg youth who have made a generous donation of their time.
So so so sooooo I'm really hoping you'll all check it out, and let me know what you think of the blog so far. I'd love to hear what you have to say, and what you think I can do to make it better. Also, if you have any information, or story ideas, or anything else that's stuitable for the blog, please let me know :)

Shower

I'm scared.
1) What is this?
2) What do I do to get rid of it?
** This is post-shower, so ignore my hair **
I'm pretty sure the boy who lived here before me never cleaned this shower. I've cleaned it once, when I kind of threw my now-thrown out mop at it. I really, really, really miss my housecleaner.

I'M BACK

Hahahaha so I'm back now!!!
I got super lazy over the past month or so, so I apologize about that. I think I spent more time this summer at my mom's house than at my place, so I didn't really have anything to write about.

I now have reasons to write:
#1 I have no choice but to spend all my time here due to school/homework
#2 We have to keep a blog for the year for Ad class, and I'd rather write this than start all over again

So there you go!
